African lives

in northern england

- from roman times to the 21st Century (A BOOKLET)

The aim of this booklet is to widen the general understanding and appreciation of African lives in northern England.

This booklet on African Lives in Northern England provides a taster of our region’s rich and diverse history.

Due to limitations of time and space, we have focused on one group only, those whose historical and lived experience reflect an African heritage, and have provided only brief summaries of individual achievements.

Yet, through recording the achievements of 54 individuals and several groups, we demonstrate the contributions that men and women of African descent have made across the whole region from Roman times to the present day.
