African lives in northern england CALENDARS
2021 Calendar
This 2021 calendar demonstrates that people of African descent are part of Northern England, by revealing their presence from Roman times to the twenty-first century. Notable visitors such as Martin Luther King are featured, as well as notable residents such as the first black professional football player, Arthur Wharton, and little-known soldiers, shopkeepers and physicians. This knowledge and appreciation will hopefully contribute to dismantling stereotypes and racism.
While the calendar focuses only on African lives, it is hoped that it will encourage further publications on the hidden stories of the many diverse communities, past and present, in Northern England.
2023 Calendar
The 2023 calendar, our second calendar, spotlights early residents living ordinary lives like Elizabeth Hunter and Malcolm Patterson, as well as famous abolitionists like Frederick Douglass and Ida B. Wells. It also reveals the important roles that women of African descent, such as Irene Ighodaro and Sylvia Massaquoi, have always played in the North East and on the world stage.
For information on the current significant contribution of women of African descent to Northern England, please see our booklet, African Lives in Northern England (2021) and the permanent exhibition trail We are Here: Inspirational Women at the Discovery Museum, Newcastle upon Tyne.
